Proven CBTC technology

Urbalis Fluence is a modernised solution that builds upon the documented success of Alstom’s Urbalis™ signalling technology already integrated into 190 metro lines worldwide, 67 of which are driverless, in 32 countries.

Urbalis Fluence takes the Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) experience a step further by merging interlocking functions into a train-centric architecture. Radio contact between trains enables gaps to be shortened, resulting in even lower headway and 24-hour operational availability.

This innovative solution, suitable for all types and sizes of systems, increases transport capacity, reduces life-cycle costs and minimises installation time and disturbances in re-signalling projects.

The best convenience and comfort for passengers

Passengers want reliable and available transportation. The improved traffic fluidity brought by Urbalis Fluence means passengers spend less time waiting on platforms, experience shorter delays and enjoy less crowded rides.

Alstom’s solution provides maximum operational flexibility thanks to routing and interlocking functions that are built into the train, which allow trains to return to the previous station in case of incidents, permitting passengers to disembark and not remain trapped between stations.

The reliable system availability and resilience of Urbalis Fluence to temporary disruptions make it ideal for fully automated operations. This includes using public networks like LTE (Long-Term Evolution), which is widely used for mobile communications, and future 5G networks. Combined with Fluence's cybersecure resilience, passengers enjoy uninterrupted, safe, and convenient travel experiences.

Lower life-cycle cost and simple line extensions or updates

Suitable for low-density areas preparing for future population growth or high-density areas that already have a saturated transportation system, Urbalis Fluence is highly scalable in terms of functions, performance and costs. Applicable to both manual and automatic train operations, its flexibility extends to its integration into both new and legacy systems. Old rolling stock can be retrofitted with zero service disruption, avoiding the drawbacks of mixed signalling and harmonising the communication between new and old trains.

Urbalis Fluence also offers unbeatable life-cycle cost savings. With a 20% reduction in the amount of trackside equipment required and a reduction of up to 30% in energy usage thanks to train coasting, it is a state-of-the-art signalling system that is less expensive to both implement and maintain than traditional CBTC systems.

  • Lille metro, France

    Lille metro, France

Inaugurated in 1983, Lille Metro was one of the world’s first fully automated driverless metro systems. To support its continued evolution, Line 1 was modernised to support compatibility across a mixed fleet of both older 26-metre and newer 52-metre trains, for enhanced automation and increasing capacity.

  • Metro line 1 in Turin, Italy

In 2022, Alstom won a turnkey contract to revamp 58 trains and supply 14 new trains with its train-centric CBTC system for line 1 of Turin Metro. This upgrade will enhance safety, capacity, and efficiency, benefiting Turin residents' daily commutes across 27 stations.
