How to Plan a Birthday

square

I’ve found I’ve been asked to help out with the planning of a lot of stuff lately. Something I realized was that most people are terrified when they hear the word “party” or “birthday” because they know that this means they  have to throw something. Let’s Breathe! From my experience, our fears of what our guests expect on our big day are way disproportional to their actual expectations.

So here are my pointers / rules:

1. Start Early. It’s horrible running around days before the party. Make sure you begin your planning about 3 weeks in advance.

2. Don’t Just Use Facebook. Use text also. Believe it or not, not everyone bothers to check their event invites on Facebook and it would be really terrible if you are missing guests because you presume they know about the party. I suggest texting and e-mailing if you have their e-mail addresses.

3. Always over-invite. You’ll be surprised at people’s priorities. They don’t all stick to their commitments  So make sure you add an extra five or so people to the list in case ‘life’ just ‘happens’ to some. It would be a shame to let all that good food go to waste  - or worse, if you planned seating, to have empty seats.

4. Plan on a colour scheme. If you don’t have a specific theme that can guide your decorating, try a nice colour. Colours are great and can provide a nice base for decorating the venue! It depends on what the event is and how personal you want to get, but you can use your colour scheme to guide you when buying plastic cups, plates, bowls, ribbons, banners, balloons, invites and even the clothes if you want people to get into the festive spirit.

5. Arrange for music. Music is a really good ice-breaker and adds ambiance to the environment. Make sure you have some kind of stereo system set up, or even just a plain CD player. You can make a CD of music according to your crowd. It depends what kind of event it is, but jazz is always a great backdrop if you are having a dinner party. An alternative to music systems would be to get a live musician – a singer with a guitar is a great idea.

day

6. Always over-cater. Try get a nice catering company if it’s a big event. Even if it’s a small one, I recommend you use a local caterer to make the food.  Unless it’s a dinner party where you are cooking yourself. Caterers are good with providing a lot of variety and you can use their experience to give you an idea for numbers. Catered food always looks professional, it’s fresh and if you get platters (savoury platters are always a hit), it arrives an hour before the party and there’s no fuss or cleaning up for you. In my experience, people eat more than you think!! You can also always take left overs home to enjoy over the following week.

7. Get wine and champagne. Again, it depends on the kind of event you are having, but (if it’s for adults) a must-have booze is red and white wine and a bottle or two of good champagne. You can also make punch – a great recipe for Sangria punch is HERE. A nice one for a Bloody Mary punch is HERE. Beer is also good if you know your crowd likes beer, as are basic ciders. But make sure you always have a non-alcoholic option like a soda or juice. There’s nothing more awkward than being the guest at a party which hasn’t catered for you. Another option if you’re having something more relaxed, is to tell your guests to bring their own booze. It’s up to you. This works nicely as they know what they like to drink. Most do anyway.

8. Balloons are nice! Okay, so what is a real party without balloons? Try and get 2 bunches of five balloons at least to fill up the room (hey, if you’re gonna do this, you may as well do it right hey?) :)

9. Give your guests a TIME. One of the worst things in my experience is to not know when the hell to leave. Unless you’re young and you’re out getting very drunk somewhere until the early hours of the morn, chances are you are mature and would like to go home to SLEEP. Or you’re just bored now. But you feel bad to leave, right? So don’t put your guests in that position and give them a legit time to leave. Make it run for like 4 hours and then let them know via the invite your times (e.g. 7pm-11pm). This lets them know that it’s okay for them to say goodbye at a certain time viz. you won’t hold it against them. This time ‘says’ that there’s a designated time they can walk up to you and say: “Thanks so much for the great night, I’m going.” You can all smile and hug and say goodbye and everyone will be much more comfortable and happy. You can end on a high! Don’t let your party drag on, please. Besides your guests, this rule is for you; so you can feel that you’ve done your job and it’s finished. It will also force the stragglers who do like to hang around eating and drinking you out of house and home to leave!

10. Send out thank you’s for your presents. This is a huge rule for me that’s close to my heart because I know what it’s like when you have gone out of your way to buy and wrap a gift for someone with lots of love and thought put into it, and they don’t say thank you. I have had this more time than I care to remember; birthdays, anniversaries, stork parties, weddings – why do people do this? For me it’s the first thing I do when I open my gifts the next day. I write down a list of every gift I’ve received and who it is from. I then make it my personal mission to e-mail, facebook message or text them to say thank you. And I make it personal. I say; “Thank you for the soaps or for the perfume.” I personalize it to what they actually got me. This goes down very well and it makes then think fondly of you an remember the party with kind memories.

Hope these help and that the event you are planning is unforgettable!

The COSMO Bartender of the Year Party

Tamika Doubell Cosmopolitan

This past week I attended a very fun event here in Cape Town, South Africa. It was held at the Shimmy Beach Club at the harbour. I loved the vibe of the evening. There were loads of people all gathered together to see who would win the coveted title of the Cosmopolitan Hottest Bartender of the Year (with prize money of R20 000)!  Cosmopolitan magazine, in partnership with Collison’s White Gold Brandy,  announced on 14 January this year the five guys and five girls who got the nod to compete for the title of “SA’s Hottest Bartender”. The 10 finalists for 2013 were featured in the February issue of Cosmo. Readers had the opportunity to scrutinize these movers and shakers of creative cocktails, and to vote for their favourite. The aim of the Cosmopolitan Hottest Bartender search every year is to find a bartender with the perfect combination of creativity and charisma, who has his or her craft honed to perfection.

The competition is not judged only on looks: each entrant has to submit an original cocktail recipe.

They will then be required to prepare their cocktails on the night of the big finale in Cape Town on 14 March, and the overall winner will walk away with the grand prize of R20 000.

The 10 finalists were:

  • Dillon Nuss from Taco Zulu, Durban
  • Le Riche Meyer from Carnival Court, Cape Town
  • Nicole Adams form Boulevard, Durban
  • Gabriella Trollip from Tiger Tiger, Cape Town
  • Domenico De Lorenzo from Molecular Bars, Johannesburg
  • Johnny Bezuidenhout from Café Caprice, Cape Town - WINNER
  • Robyn Horwitz from Movida, Johannesburg
  • Imaan Mac Quena from Jade Champagne Bar & Lounge, Cape Town
  • Nancy Ellis from Hooters, Durban
  • Donovan Prince from Café Caprice, Cape Town

Cosmo Bartender of the Year

I personally loved the girls. They had a lot of spunk and could definitely hold their own next to the boys. But I have to say, the boys had that cockiness that’s a huge crowd pleaser in something like this. Let’s put it this way……while the girls were smiling, doing a few dance moves from behind the counter and tamely stirring in the vodka, the boys were literally ripping their shirts off, jumping on the counter and flexing their tattoo-covered muscles while shaking that martini!

And let me just say .. HUBBA HUBBA! I mean, C’mon, They had us at HELLO

The winner was Johnny Bezuidenhout from Cape Town’s most popular beach bar Café Caprice and he was really deserving. MC Poppy Ntshongwana didn’t have a hard time handing over the cheque!

We shot Caprice‘s Skybok Profile a few months ago and for the video, we got Johnny to prepare a Mojito for us on-camera – check out his talent for yourself by watching it HERE.

A great performance was given by iScream & The Chocolate Stix after the show and I really enjoyed their performance. It’s nice to hear local bands singing good music. Check out their blog HERE.

Thank you to everyone involved for bringing us an awesome event!

New Years at Montecasino, Johannesburg

Christmas / New Year’s is that delicious little period in life when all the worries of the world seem to fade away into some  fantastically naughty little indulgence.

It can actually be any indulgence in the world – allow me to show you some of my little indulgences over the past 2 weeks :)

I flew up to Johannesburg with my family & stayed at the Tsogo Sun hotel, the Southern Sun Hotel, Montecasino.

It was absolutely heavenly!!

It’s a brand-new addition to the hotel family at Montecasino from my understanding… opened in May 2010.

I’ve always stayed at their legendary Palazzo hotel when I’ve travelled to Montecasino.

I still absolutely love it! But compared to this new addition, it’s a tad old-fashioned.

Apparently it’s due for refurbishment this year, which will hopefully give it the freshness & contemporary ambiance of its sister hotel the Southern Sun!

Opened in May 2010 the Southern Sun Montecasino located at The Pivot is an exciting addition to the Montecasino Precinct. The hotel has 194 bedrooms and offers all the modern facilities for both business and leisure travellers including a high spec gymnasium.

The hotel reflects a fusion of period and modern Venetian furnishings with a fresh electric style. Punchinello’s restaurant offers Mediterranean cuisine in an exciting open plan kitchen which allows guests to share in the activities of the bustling kitchen.

A contemporary bar and lounge leads out to a large wooden deck overlooking the pool which is the ideal setting for sundowners.

I absolutely LOVED my hotel!!!

We had a gorgeous view from our room overlooking the Sun Square as well as a superbly-designed lake, fully equipped with a family of ducks and my favourite – two black swans :)

Walking out of our hotel, there was easy access to the main Montecasino entertainment complex.

We spotted these fabulous Venetian-inspired statues along the way!

I loved them – there was a statue for every season. My favourite was Summer…

There was also just generally some beautiful Venetian-inspired scenery which was so inspiring.

There is an exciting hub just a 5 min walk from our hotel called Sun Square which is just brilliant!

Complete with restaurants – including the winner of Masterchef South Africa’s very own restaurant called Aarya - a musical fountain, a big screen TV, a clock tower and a giant Teatro (Italian for “Theatre”) hosting top notch productions all year round!

Everything in the complex is styled to look like Venice, which I loved.

This is where we celebrated New Year’s Eve…. my best New Year’s of them all!!

The fireworks at the stroke of midnight were marvelous!!!

I absolutely loved them.

I think fireworks at midnight on New Year’s is an absolute MUST.

Fireworks & champagne, that’s a true celebration for a new year <3

All these pics are by my brother, Dane Doubell.

Prior to the countdown on New Year’s Eve we enjoyed the award-winning, much-acclaimed musical production Dirty Dancing.

It blew me away!!!

On New Year’s Eve we started a special new tradition which I hope will last for a very long time…

We lit 2 beeswax candles which were part of a delicate little ornament I received as a gift from a friend who went to the German Christmas Market last year!

71

I lit the candle on the left for the old year and blew out all of the past.

Then I lit the candle on the right for the future, and breathed in the light of the new year!

72

I recently created a quote for myself which is where the premise of this tradition began :)

Breathe out the past and breathe in the future

I also saw one great quote at Skoobs - my new favourite book store – which held lovely significance for me!

84

how true!

To top it all off, I threw a lucky penny into this fountain on New Year’s Eve and made a wish ……….. (i’m not telling!)

Okay okay it might have something to do with the necklace i was wearing………….. hehehe ;)

74

What I totally enjoyed about the Montecasino was walking around the complex popping into this shop and that, grabbing an iced coffee and watching the live entertainment the Monte organizes.

There’s always some entertainment in the centre, from saxophone players to magicians to singers to circus folk.

On the last day we visited the Montecasino Bird Gardens ……… and WOOWWWW!

I loved it.

My impressions of the park were that it is very clean and spacious.

Also that they have such a diverse collection of birds.

The birds are well looked after and I was thoroughly delighting in all the various exotic birds they have there…

IMG_8422

It also turns out I’m more afraid of birds than I realized… when handling some exotic bird at one point, one of his friends flew onto my head and I got the biggest fright ever!

I screamed so loud I probably scared most the patrons, and lucky for you I have a very embarrassing video !

It was a nightmare, but my brother seemed to enjoy it, haha!

Finally, that night, we went and got a super Thai Massage!

Those massages are absolutely something else – very rough but heavenly at the same time!

We did a foot massage and then went into a full body “deep tissue” thai massage.

Absolutely incredible!

They actually manipulate your entire body as part of the massage.

It’s quite something – had me stretching in positions I never knew I could!

The parlour where the Thai spa was lay inside the Montecasino complex, making it very convenient for us!

I just remember walking in and smelling the sweet scent of vanilla incense…. it was stunning <3

I loved everything about this place and it certainly made me add “get a thai massage at least once a month” to my resolutions list! ;)

Here is some more info on Thai massages (I found it quite interesting!)

Traditional Thai massage is based on the belief that all life force spirals around special pathways, or prana pathways, in the body. There are 72 000 invisible energy lines, which make up the energy body. Any blockage along these lines can cause disease (dis-ease) on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. Thai massage focuses on 10 important lines, called sen sip. By releasing any blocked energy along the sen lines, prana can flow freely, thereby restoring balance, health and harmony in the body.

Traditional Thai massage is a combination of acupressure, reflexology and yogic exercises, or gentle stretching, which manipulates the energy lines and so diminishes tension, stimulates metabolism and creates a feeling of wellbeing and vitality. Unlike some other therapies, you will feel refreshed and energized after a Thai massage, rather than sedated and lethargic.

After a glorious holiday in Johannesburg, we flew back to my home town Port Elizabeth where I am currently writing to you from!

Stay tuned for more updates as I go out into 2013 living outside my comfort zone! :D

As I attempt to keep my resolutions, start some interesting new hobbies, get daring & get snapping away to bring you some awesome photo moments!

The Sunglass Hut Out-Of-The-Box Party, The Goodhope FM Summer Launch & The Gagabration Cruise!

Recently I attended some really cool events…

The Sunglass Hut ‘Out Of The Box’ Party at the V&A Waterfront was one.

To launch their latest venture with a bang, Out the Box (or #SunglassHutOTB as it has been hashtagged) set up a huge marquee at the waterfront and equipped it with lights, cameras, (lots of champagne) and action!

MC Janez Vermeiren from Top Billing held the evening together and introduced renowned South African musician Toya DeLazy who performed for us!

The pop-up-store then unveiled the latest collection to be released in 2013.

I was soo chuffed with my R1000 vouchers to spend at Sunglass Hut!!

It was in joburg at Melrose Arch a few nights prior to that and from what I hear it was also quite spectacular!

Thank you Sunglass Hut for an awesome event! You can visit their website at www.sunglasshut.com.

I then went to The GoodHope FM’s Summer Launch Party at The Cullinan Hotel in association with Tsogo Sun and The Next 48 Hours, which was fantastic!

There were drinks and snacks going around and I was so bloody starving by that stage … all this running around! A girl’s gotta eat!

There was a stellar performance by a Cape Town singer Lucy Tops, singing an Adele hit – she was very good.

You should like her page HERE and support local talent! :)

Guess what I took the following photos on my phone… pretty good, nuh?

Finally, as you know, GAGA was in town!

For those who didn’t, what town are you living in?!

The Next 48 Hours was awesome enough to organize an exclusive boat cruise around Table Bay before the concert.

There was champagne – a lot of it (surprise I didn’t fall overboard) and yummy snacks.

Yes. Just the way I like it.

Here is a gallery of the snaps from the cruise… you can view the official photos HERE.

I’ve also included youtube videos of Gaga at the concert!

The Kartell Courtyard Party

So have you ever heard of “Kartell”?

I hadn’t until a recent event shed light on the topic and boy was I wow’d!

Italian furniture manufacturer, famous for their unique plastic creations opened their first mono-branded store in Cape Town.

http://www.kubearchitecture.com/2012/02/new-kartell-flagship-store-in-cape-town.html

Kartell can be likened to “Cool to have” brands such as Apple and Camper which Cape Town Style afficionados hunger for. The introduction of the Masters chair, deigned by Philippe Starck with Eugeni Quitllet only added to their popularity, with more than 100 000 having been sold world wide. Starck has also done work for the likes of Puma and Nike.

http://www.kubearchitecture.com/2012/02/new-kartell-flagship-store-in-cape-town.html

I love their bright colours. I also love that all Kartell products are recyclable.

Apparently in 2011 Kartell achieved UNI EN ISO 14001: 2004 which is a certification that attests the organization has implemented a management system capable of controlling and minimizing its environmental impact.

On Thursday they had an event at their flagship store (Shop 2, The Hudson, cnr. Strand & Hudson streets, De Waterkant) and the event was to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Louis Ghost chair.

I sat in it and I can personally vouch that it was “molto confortevole”!

(These Italians sure know what they’re doing.)

The venue was divine; it was a gorgeous day and there was a massive turn-out.

Everyone was enjoying the delicious drinks, canapés, beers (thank you Peroni) and music from DJ Brent at http://dreamweddingdjs.co.za.

Oyster King was also there giving out fresh oysters to eat!

There was a lucky draw at some point and I forgot to bring my business card, gggrrrrr!!

I made some amazing friends there as well – what can I say, it was a huge party!

COSMO’s Swimwear Pool Party to Kick Start Summer 2012

If there’s one group who can sure throw a party………. it’s the Cosmo Clan!

They truly outdid themselves this year at their Swimwear Pool Party which was held at Shandiz Restaurant & Cocktail Bar, Mandela Rhodes Place, corner of Wale and Burg Street, Cape Town.

I dressed up in my sexiest best and joined them for what was an evening nothing short of Cosmolicious!

I mean, honestly!

What a way to kick start Summer.

Everything was big, bold & colourful.

I thoroughly enjoyed some of the eye candy that was walking around serving the food and giving away free stuff!

It started at 5pm and wrapped up at 10pm.

Sure, I’ll have a towel! Thanks.

I barely remember much as there was so much going on all around me; I have flashes of swirling ice cream,  a swimwear show, Revlon painting my nails,  Dentyne giving me gum, Billabong’s pool of balls (sounds bad) to win my hat, trying on Bronx shoes, Goldfish playing and firedancers putting on a good show!

The whole thing was so utterly 4D if you pressed your nose to this blog post you could probably smell the chocolate mousse from these guys -

COSMOPOLITAN turned up the heat this weekend to celebrate the long-awaited arrival of summer. Held at Shandiz Mandela Rhodes Place, the crystal clear pool with its cityscape backdrop was the perfect way to enjoy the first of many pool parties this festive season. Guests were treated to cocktails, delicious snacks, loads of ice cream and some very hot bodies. The stunning Anthea Schotlz opened the event with a sexy sunset session followed by an amazing performance by Goldfish.

All in all a great night with awesome friends, Thanks Cosmo SA!

The venue was fantastic and the weather was perfect.

The Launch of Vision Music Records

Last week I went to two fantastic events in one night (adrenalin junkie much!?)

The first was the launch of a new recording label in Atlantis, Cape Town.

Laurenzo Davids – brother of our Idols Season 5 co-winner Sasha-Lee –  launched Vision Music Records or “VMR” for short.

Most of You know us as LOWAFFY PRODUCTIONS! We are an Independent Record Label, signing new upcoming artists and producing music. Music lessons are now available too! Contact us for further info!

- facebook.com

with Laurenzo

The venue was simply perfect!

There was champagne (my fav!) and soft drinks for everyone, as well as snacks going around during what must have been one of the most moving speeches I’ve heard in a while.

Laurenzo Davids has such a charm about him and speaks totally from the heart.

He highlighted his journey to this point; where his passion for singing has been met with his passion for people in this new venture.

Respect!

He thanked his family and, of course, certain friends who have been very much involved in the “vision” that is “Vision Music Records”.

Atlantis can certainly be proud of this beacon of hope and his talented family, who obviously have a gift for helping others and creating beautiful opportunities for their community in Atlantis.

With a few artists already signed to the label, I’m sure the new business will be extremely successful, rewarding and not to mention exciting for this group of entrepreneurs!

Thank you guys for a wonderful evening!

The second event was the Linkin Park Concert!

Held at the Cape Town stadium, it was absolutely incredible!

What an adrenalin rush!

I also have their new CD which I literally cannot stop listening to.

Go buy it now!

The concert, in my opinion, was fantastic.

Although that being said from someone who wasn’t standing in the crowd below, which I rate must be a huge turn-off.

I did it once before at Kings of Leon and it was awful.

Everyone’s pushing you, trying to see ……… you can’t see …….. you can’t move ……. it’s hot ……….. it’s loud ……… you can’t hear the music properly……. and getting out when it’s over is the biggest mission ever!

Being in general standing kind of spoils the experience.

Unless you have Golden Circle or are seated, I don’t think you could have a good experience.

I was in the Red Block and I was so pleased.

Nothing beats actually seeing the artist you love and being able to actually hear what they’re saying.

That’s my advice if you’re keen to go to the concerts coming through to Cape Town in the months ahead, which include:

Lady Gaga

The Parlotones

Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Chris Brown

and Justin Bieber!

Here is the music video for one of Linkin Parks’s latest songs, “Castle of Glass” :

I simply love it!

Days Of Our Lives in South Africa!

“Like sands through the hour glass, so are the days of our lives………………………”

Cue music!

Days of our Lives is a daytime soap opera broadcast on the NBC television network.

It’s one of the longest-running scripted television programs in the world, airing nearly every weekday in the United States since November 8, 1965.

This past week, three of the stars from the NBC hit soapie flew to South Africa for a two-city tour!

Galen Gering (Rafe), Drake Hogestyn (John) and  Arianne Zucker (Nicole) enjoyed the gorgeous welcome that was waiting for them here and toured the country promoting the show and really just celebrating a show which has been running on our screens for so long and which has a huge fan base here.

Here are some other faces you may recognize from the hit-soapie:

I was honoured to be invited to an exclusive cocktail evening where SABC 3 hosted the cast members at The Expresso Penthouse here in Cape Town, to celebrate the soapie that has for many years graced the small screen in South Africa.

…. And what a wonderful event it was!

SABC truly outdid themselves; the décor was stunning and the food was even better!

I couldn’t have asked for a better location for the evening, a stunning penthouse on a beautiful summer’s evening overlooking the city with views of the ocean and the dazzling ocean liner lights.

Magical.

There was a fabulous arrangement of champagne glasses upon arrival and guests were given a glass of Pierre Jourdain or a cosmo!

Well what can I say, I kept going back for more :P

When speeches came around, MC Janez welcomed them officially and gave them each the mic to say a few words.

I was struck by the humility of all of them, especially of Drake Hogestyn a.k.a. John Black!

He is just so fun-loving, light-hearted and down-to-earth which was wonderful to see.

During his speech he said that the welcome they’ve received here in South Africa has been overwhelming and that they are very grateful.

He mentioned how when they go back to work today (Monday), they will be surrounded by the lights and the studios of NBC and they’ll just look at each other and smile.

To him, they share a secret; the secret of South Africa and their fantastic trip here.

He said that it’s been a magical and unforgettable experience that they’ll never forget.

To me personally, I think it’s crazy how with one plane ride they’ll be transported to another world.

It must be weird for them to come somewhere so far away and receive such a huge welcome, have such a fabulous time and then have to travel back to their reality, remembering all their fans here and the lifestyle that is “South Africa”!

Thank you SABC for a superb evening, I enjoyed every second!

Black Top Rally, Port Elizabeth

As they tell you on their website, The Blacktop Rally is “nothing short of the wildest road trip South Africa has ever seen.”

“It’s a roadtrip of epic proportions, covering between 2,800 – 3,500km of the best backroads South Africa has to offer, sharing the experience with like-minded individuals and experiencing a fantastic adventure.”

It kicked off on the 29th of April, and the six day trip from Johannesburg to Cape Town found itself in Port Elizabeth on Day 4.

Well how about that, so did I! ;)

The night before the drivers went to the Scribante track, they all partied in the famous Stanley Street of Port Elizabeth.

I had the pleasure of being invited by my very good friend and their official photographer, Seagram Pearce (http://www.seagrampearce.com/)

While there, I was jumped by a TV crew who interviewed me for the official Black Top Rally TV Show!

Crazy, I know.

Luckily my brother was also there shooting some snaps with his awesome camera (all the pics you see in this article) and he captured the moment ;)

The Black Top Rally’s official sponsor this year was Rockstar Energy Drinks (http://rockstarenergy.com/)

As their press release reads, 50 drivers embarked on the roadtrip and there was an incredible variety of cars from old school Plymouth Barracuda’s and Chevelle’s to modern high-tech sports cars such as BMW M3′s and Nissan GT-R’s.

Well I got to drive in one and I can assure you they were not playing around!

Insane!

The FCM Fashion Party March 2012

The FCM Fashion Party held at Club 169 on Longstreet this past Saturday night was a huge success.

Arriving to a glass of champagne and a leopard print goodie bag filled with delights – including the latest copy of the Marie Claire magazine, a lip gloss, a sparkling water, free beauty treatments and more – I was impressed with the party that was awaiting me.

Gorgeously decorated chocolate cupcakes were on offer to guests and a pumping crowd and photographers circled the surroundings of what used to be the old Cape To Cuba restaurant.

Models adorned with FCM designs walked amongst the crowd, showing off the talent of designer Ferial Dawood and her hot couture label.

Designers from Phi Casa and RedBow were present, enjoying the cool tunes and glam designs of the clothes.

The evening began at 21:30 and ended well-past midnight.

The party was held in honour of the FCM label.
