Rotary Family Health Days

Coming up this week is Rotary International’s amazing initiative, The Rotary Family Health Days (RFHD). Rotary has formed a fantastic partnership with the Department of Health, Coca-Cola, the CDC and USAID in order to host a series of Health Days (across the world) from 9-11 May 2013. On the days the Department of Health will supply qualified people to do completely free testing, screenings and counselling. Rotary’s role is to give as much support and service as possible where needed during the three days. All Rotary Clubs in the world are taking part in this initiative during these three days.

What Lies Beneath Shoot with Sarah part 2

The next morning our protagonist wakes up in her hotel room with a red rose and a letter outside her door. It’s from her husband, apologizing for his affair and begging for her forgiveness. He confesses everything, along with the fact that he secretly flew in from his business trip in Vermont just to watch her show. In the letter he tells her how magnificent her performance was and how much he loves her and how sorry he is. He asks, with one single red rose, if she will accept his apology and forgive him. He writes about the dreams and plans for their lives together which they once had. He wants to re-ignite those dreams, as well as the flame between them. Our protagonist reads the letter and is taken back to a time when they were indeed very much in love and shared many dreams. She thinks about their memories and the passionate times they’ve shared together as she decides what she will do.

1. The Rose. Roses are ancient symbols of love and beauty. The red rose was also adopted as a symbol of the blood of the Christian martyrs. Obviously the rose is the perfect symbol of the love between our protagonist and her husband, as well as the beauty of their relationship. The red is associated with blood which is also poignant as blood is connected to life. It is responsible for transporting oxygen and nutrients around our body, as well as playing a role in removing waste from our system. In a way, this symbol represents that he wishes to remove the ‘waste’ that has accumulated in their relationship – culminating in the toxic affair. As blood also plays a role in repair in our bodies, so this symbol serves furthermore to represent his wish to take the first steps toward repairing the life they have together that has been wounded. Again, the red of the rose playing a role as a motif throughout our story. See it’s symbolism HERE.

2. Perfume. While she is relieved, she is unsure what to do. She wonders about whether or not she will forgive him as she gets ready. On her dressing table is everything beautiful, delicate, feminine and luxurious. It represents her inner self and the side of herself she is confident in, unlike their relationship which she is unsure of. We have her seated at her dressing table as she remembers all their loving times together. She sprays on her favourite perfume. It’s the same scent she was wearing when they first met, on a romantic rainy evening years ago, and this moment takes her back to that time. The definition of perfume is “A pleasing, agreeable scent or odor”, made up of the word “fuming” - To fill or permeate with fragrance; impart a pleasant odor to. This is symbolic as these memories are like a pleasing fragrance to a troubled mind. She thinks back to their gentle and sensual first kiss.

3. Music. Finally she makes her decision. She decides to forgive him and give their love another try. Her exuberance in spirit is matched only by her cheeky smile as she realizes that “she’s still got it!“. Her husband has chosen to stay with her over his mistress. There is a sense of triumph mixed with lighthearted relief. Their love is indeed the same beautiful song she’s remembered all along. We have her sitting next to a piano, with her smile at the outcome of her tragedy as the symbolic Crescendo in the musical score that was this story.

Sharing My Life via Social Media

We all love social media. It’s good for building business, building relationships and for sheer enjoyment. These are the social media platforms I use, literally in order of preference.

1. Facebook. I have a personal Facebook page and a public page for myself as an actress. You can view it HERE. I really had to think about how to use my public page because whenever I did jobs or attended cool industry events I would post about it on my personal page anyway. I tried to only post about my professional life on my public page, but let’s face it, you have more reach with your personal page. I had way more friends than official ‘likes’ on my public page, and I was finding that I wanted to post about my successes on my personal platform anyway. So I’ve always run the risk of not utilizing my public page properly and of being repetitive if i did. Yet I still felt I needed it. Then, to make matters worse, FB introduced the concept of public subscribers to your personal page. This, I soon learned, is the same as ‘fans‘ or ‘followers‘ on your public page. They could follow you personally if they wanted to and you could just change the setting of what you posted to either make it public (for your ‘subscribers‘) or keep it to just be for your actual friends. So you were totally in control of your privacy. And it made it so much easier for you to just update one page. So what was now the point of having a public page at all? It seems I’m not the only one with this dilemma; I’ve read many interesting articles on this and it actually was a problem for a lot of actors, comedians, sport stars and public figures when FB introduced this. Mainly because it split their followers. Some followers would ‘like’ and stick to following their public page, and other followers who were smarter would just subscribe to the public feeds on their personal pages. So now they, like myself, had to repeat everything they said to both their public and personal pages so as to update everyone. That can be annoying for people getting your feed twice if they have you as a friend and have officially liked your page too. I realized that friends and family are the ones you want to tell good news to anyway. So your first instinct is to upload those awesome pictures, announce the good news about a role you got, or shout out about that event your attending on your personal page. But then what about the people who have just liked your public page and don’t subscribe to you personally? They don’t get to see or know about those things. So either way, you alienate somebody. This is not ideal. These famous sport stars, comedians and public figures eventually came up with a way to resolve this by simply joining both platforms into one single, neat page. They do this by absorbing their personal profile page into their public page, thereby creating only one platform. This platform can then act as both their personal and professional realms. And, it has no limits to the number of people that can ‘subscribe’ or ‘follow’ (which is the case with subscribers to a personal page only). This way, they only update once and they can simply change the publicity setting depending on who they want to see it – this applies to check ins, photo albums, status updates and so on. Sound good? Yes, but the only problem is that with this amalgamation, you will lose all your photos and history which you currently have on your personal page. Not nice. 2. Twitter. This used to be top of my list, but I’m bored. I’m not gonna lie. Many people will tell you i’m crazy, but unless you have something definite you are tweeting about (I enjoy updating my business one, for instance), it runs the risk of being an online platform for self-loving dilettantes who are captivated by the sound of their own voice. How cringeworthy. I find this with a lot of my actor friends and, unfortunately, I can’t shake the wince when I read some of their tweets. I like tweeting about the news, current affairs, books, charities, good quotes, bible verses, sports updates, travel stories, or actual jobs I’m doing. Read my post on how to use Twitter HERE.

3. Instagram. Gorgeous and fun! For the pictures that don’t make the cut onto Facebook or Twitter. Arty, silly or simply fun pics! I’m enjoying it more and more, see my article on it HERE.

4. Pinterest. Imagine we are all artists or graphic designers and we have massive, creative pinboards all around our bedrooms and studios! Imagine that everytime we see a picture or a quote in a magazine we tear it out and pin it up on one of our boards. We collect all kinds of pictures spanning across all different sorts of topics and are inspired by them everytime we look at them. This is Pinterest. It’s a community of creative minds who love to look at pretty things and share them with the world. This is an awesome online vehicle to advertise, to inspire, to share and to enjoy. I love pictures and you can find some really beautiful ones on just about anything on Pinterest. Go on – try – type in a word HERE. People have some really great ‘boards’ on it (which is where a collection of photos is grouped on your profile) and these boards span across so many different themes. A person can have more than one board. I have a board called “Delish” where I post pictures of delicious foods I see. I also have “Favourite Places & Spaces” where I post pictures of beautiful scenes. I have a nice picture of a place called Sleepy Hollow Farm in Vermont on there. See it HERE. I personally follow the board ‘Chocolate’ by a user named Heidi. See it HERE. There are some tasty pics up on it which she has repinned from other sites she’s spotted them on. I used to really like www.weheartit.com but I’m starting to like Pinterest more. Mostly because of the sizes of the pictures. I look up pics for my blog articles here. It’s fantastic! I also advertise my blog articles on it, for the millions of users who log on and sift through pictures every day. I even added a Pinterest share button here on my blog under every article, so if you see any pictures you like in any of my articles, you can click on the Pinterest button and share it, or as they say, PIN IT!

Simon’s In Constantia

Okay, so when it comes to food i’m no expert. That being said, I do know a good steak when I taste one! I like eating food at nice places with good service, a great wine list and a cosy, festive atmosphere. I recently went to a restaurant here in Cape Town called Simon’s. It’s situated at a beautiful wine farm called Groot Constantia and during the day, the views of the vineyards are heavenly. My mom and I ordered a steak with cooked veggies and our friend ordered the duck. Together we shared a bottle of Merlot and it was the perfect evening. The food there is very good and I can highly recommend it! For dessert we had a cheeseboard. I must say, it’s my new all-time favourite. It got me thinking about some of the best places I’ve been for dinner here in Cape Town, South Africa. If you live here, here’s a list of places I would recommend (I also include some coffee places that offer light lunches because we all love a good coffee and it’s nice to try somewhere new):

Easter 2013

Easter was awesome, exhilarating, special and delicious. For me, as a Christian, Easter is the true new year. It is the period from Good Friday to Easter Sunday (when Christ was crucified and when he was resurrected). It is the most important and oldest festival of the Christian Church, culminating in the celebration of the resurrection of Christ (Easter Sunday) on the third day after his crucifixion at Calvary as described in the New Testament. He died on the cross to pay for our sins and allow us entry into God’s kingdom after death. His resurrection symbolizes the resurrection of all of us after death into Heaven, where our souls are very much alive and immortal in His eternal Kingdom (if we lived as Christians according to His Word). In short, his resurrection symbolizes new life. It sets Him apart from all the other historical figures in those times who claimed to be the Son of God because none of them came alive again after they died. This was a true miracle. Through doing this he proved that what he had been saying all along was true; Every miracle he performed and everything he preached about God and the way man must live on earth was true. It renews your faith, this time of year, and for me it only cements it. You look again at the important lessons of the Bible and the Ten Commandments and re-commit yourself to living the loving Christian lifestyle. Satan will always be around to throw us off track and we need to be strong. Of course we will always sin, no matter how hard we try, because we live in a fallen world. What sets you apart is your repentance and prayers for forgiveness. God guarantees us He will always forgive us if we confess our sins and repent.

Easter is the culmination of the Passion of Christ, preceded by Lent, a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance which begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts forty days (not counting Sundays). The Sunday before Easter is Palm Sunday, with the Wednesday before Easter being known as Spy Wednesday. The last three days before Easter are Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday (sometimes referred to as Silent Saturday). Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday respectively commemorate Jesus’ entry in Jerusalem, the Last Supper and the Crucifixion. Easter is followed by a fifty-day period called Eastertide, or the Easter Season, ending with Pentecost Sunday. The week beginning with Easter Sunday is called Easter Week or the Octave of Easter, and each day is prefaced with “Easter”, e.g. Easter Monday, Easter Tuesday, etc.

It is a very holy time for me. I really enjoy the service on Easter Sunday, before sunrise on the day of resurrection. The service is very early and I am not usually a morning person, but for this I am! The Easter Vigil is performed during this service. This is the most important liturgy of the year, which begins in total darkness with the blessing of the Easter fire, the lighting of the large Paschal candle (symbolic of the Risen Christ) and the chanting of the Exultet or Easter Proclamation.

There’s something about the lighting of the fire and the candle that makes you feel reborn in a way. After this service of light, a number of readings from the Old Testament are read; these tell the stories of creation, the sacrifice of Isaac, the crossing of the Red Sea, and the foretold coming of the Messiah. This part of the service climaxes with the singing of the Gloria and the Alleluia and the proclamation of the Gospel of the resurrection. At this time, the lights are brought up and the church bells are rung, according to local custom. A sermon may be preached after the gospel. Then the focus moves from the lectern to the font. Anciently, Easter was considered the ideal time for converts to receive baptism, and this practice continues within Roman Catholicism and the Anglican Communion. It is traditional for the congregation to renew the vows of their baptismal faith at this point. The Easter Vigil concludes with the celebration of the Eucharist (known in some traditions as Holy Communion).

The whole service consists of 4 parts:

The Service of Light.
The Service of Lessons.
Christian Initiation, or the Renewal of Baptismal Vows.
The Holy Eucharist with the administration of Easter Communion.

Here is something interesting I found: The first recorded “Sunrise Service” took place in 1732 among the Single Brethren in the Moravian Congregation at Herrnhut, Saxony, in what is now Germany. Following an all-night vigil they went before dawn to the town graveyard, God’s Acre, on the hill above the town, to celebrate the Resurrection among the graves of the departed. This service was repeated the following year by the whole congregation and subsequently spread with the Moravian Missionaries around the world, including Old Salem in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

So you see then the chocolate eggs are just the cherry on top for me Eggs symbolize the beginning of new life, fertility and abundance. And of course, chicks come from eggs and represent rebirth and springtime. Rabbits are known for their rapid reproduction and therefore also represent fertility and new life. So this is why these are popular symbols at Easter and why we eat them

I Live In Africa!

I live in Africa, more specifically, South Africa. We are surrounded by so much beauty here every day that sometimes I have to sit back and thank God for all the many gorgeous sites he provides for us here. Around where I grew up on the east coast is a lion park. It’s called Seaview Lion Park. If you’re ever planning a trip to South Africa, this is where you wanna go. Don’t be fooled by the name though, they have many other animals there also.

We were recently there shooting their video profile. I absolutely love nature so this was a heavenly project for me! The park is really well-run and clean. Even though all the animals are in cages, trust me, they are well-looked after. They are very tame (i say ‘very’ rather cautiously) and seemed to be very sociable with all the tourists. Curious even.

These wild animals, believe me when you see them up close, are truly a marvel. You realize that there is so much out there we don’t know and I can’t believe anyone who meets them could believe there isn’t a God who created them.

1. Power. They are so huge in person and so strong (even the babies). I was just amazed that they didn’t hurt us. In the photos we are petting them. Don’t know how we did it, they could have taken us out at any moment they wanted! I remember we were filming a scene of a black panther and he got curious about our tripod. He came over a couple times and started pawing it (is that a verb?) Anyway! He was very gentle – even his gentle was quite impressive – but he didn’t aim at hurting anyone. To him it’s playing. Being friendly. It’s like they are emphatic and can tell when you mean them harm and don’t mean them harm. He could definitely have managed a good dent in the metal, and in any of us for that matter – good thing we caught him in time!

2. Beauty. Each of these animal is so majestic, just looking at them inspires you! Each are so different, just like us in this world, each with their own unique skills and talents to contribute to the ‘Greater Order’ of things! Not only are they beautiful, but they take moments to appreciate the beauty of the world they live in. Like this lion below feeling the cool wind on his face during a hot morning. How often do we stop to do that?

3. Connecting. My favourite part was when I petted the baby tigers! These animals can really teach you the value of connecting; to each other, to them, to life itself. And that is a thrill in itself! To feel you are connected to the world around you, to be open, to take a chance and maybe even a risk. For the sheer thrill of connecting with the wild spirit that lies fundamentally in each one of us. Life, and nature, is meant to be enjoyed wholeheartedly! Get out and experience it!

Filming Vovo Telo for Skybok

I’m very blessed in that, through the shoots we do for Skybok, I get to travel to so many different places, meet so many different people and – best of all – see amazing things. I’m remembering now back to a place we filmed in Cape Town called Vovo Telo. It’s a trendy little bar at the waterfront and they are really well-known for their coffees and pastries. I also love their pizzas and artisan breads. I’ve realised that the coffee culture truly has grown both here and internationally. Now, it’s becoming an art to pour the milk and mix the froth! The competition is on for who can make the best shapes on the top of the cappuccino nowadays. But for the most part I try not to get too sucked into drinking coffee for the sake of it. On the day we filmed their video profile, I just stuck to a peach iced tea. I love them and BOS is my new favourite make! How about you? Are you a coffee fiend?

Keeping a Journal

One thing I really love to do is write. I’m an expressive person by nature with lots of thoughts and ideas that spill into my head at any given time. I realized recently that I have no vehicle through which to do justice to all that. So I took myself to exclusive books and got myself a gorgeous little moleskin book and some nice pens!

With the new year having started I’ve decided to journal more. Going to Spain, Portugal and New York this year should see me filling up quite a few pages!

I believe in balancing your life – physical, social, mental and spiritual. Journalism is a great way to achieve that balance.

After journaling for about a week, I’ve realized a few things:

I have a better idea of what 2012 was like.
I have a better idea of what I want 2013 to look like.
I take for granted how lucky and blessed I am.
I much prefer old-fashioned pen and paper to the screen and keyboard!

My Madrid To-Do List!

Madrid is the big thing on my lips right now. I am going over there for a Rotary convention in June – well, actually it’s in Lisbon, but i’m spending 2 weeks in Madrid before the convention. One of my ’3 Things’ this month was to compile a list of things I simply must do while I’m there. So I’ve done my research and here are the things in Madrid that appeal to me:

1. The night-time flea market The Mercado de San Miguel. This sounds like heaven to me! I love flea markets… we have many similar markets like this here in Cape Town. This one sounds pretty fantastic. I like that it’s festive and full of local flavours and foods. It offers high quality products, pastries, tapas, a wine bar, and a variety of foods with 33 vendors. There are steel tables for picnics within the venue in which it is housed called Plaza de San Miguel, closest to the east side of the Plaza Mayor. It operates Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays between 10am and midnight. And on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 10am and 2am.

2. The Palacio Real de Madrid which is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family at the city of Madrid. This sounds amazing and a tour of this would definitely be on my list! Apparently it opened in 1755 and is open now daily from 10am to 6pm. I absolutely love history and I think seeing this would be a treat!

3. Gran Vía is next. An ornate and upscale shopping street located in central Madrid, it’s also known as the “Spanish Broadway”. Known as one of the streets with the most nightlife in Europe, and the “street that never sleeps”, it’s definitely on my list!

4. The Temple of Dood. This is an ancient Egyptian temple that was rebuilt in Madrid! The temple was built originally 15 kilometres south of Aswan in southern Egypt very close to the first cataract of the Nile and to the great religious center dedicated to the goddess Isis, in Philae. In 1960, due to the construction of the Great Dam of Aswan and the consequent threat posed to several monuments and archeological sites, UNESCO made an international call to save this rich historical legacy. As a sign of gratitude for the help provided by Spain in saving the temples of Abu Simbel, the Egyptian state donated the temple of Debod to Spain in 1968. The temple was rebuilt in one of Madrid’s parks, the Parque del Oeste, near the Royal Palace of Madrid, and opened to the public in 1972.

5. The Plaza de Cibeles sounds amazing! Wow, this is a square with lots to offer. The fountain of Cibeles in the centre of the square is named after Cybele (or Ceres), the Roman goddess of fertility. It’s seen as one of Madrid’s most important symbols. Built between 1777 and 1782, the fountain depicts the goddess sitting on a chariot pulled by two lions. The fountain of Cibeles has been adopted by the football club Real Madrid, whose fans use the area to celebrate its triumphs in competitions. (I hope they win something while I’m there!) Also in the square is the Cibeles Palace (formerly named Communications Palace). The cathedral-like landmark was built in 1909 as the headquarters of the postal service. There is also the Bank of Spain and the General Staff Headquarters of the Spanish Army. Finally, opposite the Bank of Spain is the Palacio de Linares. The baroque palace was built in 1873 by a rich banker, José de Murga. It houses the Casa de América, a cultural center and art gallery focused mostly on Latin American arts. And guess what? The building is said to be haunted by the spirits of its first owner, who made his fortune in the New World!

The COSMO Bartender of the Year Party

This past week I attended a very fun event here in Cape Town, South Africa. It was held at the Shimmy Beach Club at the harbour. I loved the vibe of the evening. There were loads of people all gathered together to see who would win the coveted title of the Cosmopolitan Hottest Bartender of the Year (with prize money of R20 000)! Cosmopolitan magazine, in partnership with Collison’s White Gold Brandy, announced on 14 January this year the five guys and five girls who got the nod to compete for the title of “SA’s Hottest Bartender”. The 10 finalists for 2013 were featured in the February issue of Cosmo. Readers had the opportunity to scrutinize these movers and shakers of creative cocktails, and to vote for their favourite. The aim of the Cosmopolitan Hottest Bartender search every year is to find a bartender with the perfect combination of creativity and charisma, who has his or her craft honed to perfection.

The competition is not judged only on looks: each entrant has to submit an original cocktail recipe.

They will then be required to prepare their cocktails on the night of the big finale in Cape Town on 14 March, and the overall winner will walk away with the grand prize of R20 000.

I personally loved the girls. They had a lot of spunk and could definitely hold their own next to the boys. But I have to say, the boys had that cockiness that’s a huge crowd pleaser in something like this. Let’s put it this way……while the girls were smiling, doing a few dance moves from behind the counter and tamely stirring in the vodka, the boys were literally ripping their shirts off, jumping on the counter and flexing their tattoo-covered muscles while shaking that martini!

And let me just say .. HUBBA HUBBA! I mean, C’mon, They had us at HELLO

The winner was Johnny Bezuidenhout from Cape Town’s most popular beach bar Café Caprice and he was really deserving. MC Poppy Ntshongwana didn’t have a hard time handing over the cheque!

We shot Caprice‘s Skybok Profile a few months ago and for the video, we got Johnny to prepare a Mojito for us on-camera – check out his talent for yourself by watching it HERE.

A great performance was given by iScream & The Chocolate Stix after the show and I really enjoyed their performance. It’s nice to hear local bands singing good music. Check out their blog HERE.
